Mind Body Medicine
The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well. -Hippocrates
It is often said that we can change our life by changing our thinking. A patient"s emotional and psychological makeup can greatly influence their ability to heal. Karen Kacey states that “the mind is the body’s physician.” This could not be truer since it is the mind that ultimately controls our physiology and biochemistry through the nervous system and hormones. What the mind believes the body will achieve.
There are various techniques that come under Mind Body Medicine, such as biofeedback, cognitive behavioural therapy, and relaxation techniques like meditation and progressive muscle relaxation. All of these techniques work by using the power of thoughts and emotions to influence physical health.
When you are physically or emotionally stressed, your body releases stress hormones that can affect all your systems and organs. For example, stress related to hostility and anxiety can result in disruptions in heart and immune function. Similarly, depression and distress may diminish the body"s natural capacity to heal. Hostile attitudes may increase your risk for coronary heart disease, obesity (especially around the waist), insulin resistance (which can lead to diabetes), and abnormal cholesterol (specifically, high triglycerides and low levels of high density lipoprotein or HDL -- the good kind of cholesterol).
Mind-body techniques help you get your body and mind to relax and to reduce the levels of stress hormones in your body, so that your immune system is better able to fight off illness.
