PMS Premenstrual Syndrome
While Premenstrual Syndrome, or PMS, is seemingly rampant in modern society, it is not “normal,” does not have to be tolerated, and can be resolved. Symptoms may occur any time between menarche and menopause, and may wax and wane in severity over a woman’s lifetime. While most women will tell us that they have some mild symptoms prior to their menses, there is a group of women whose symptoms are severe enough to disrupt their lives. Generally with PMS, women experience symptoms during the second half of their cycle, from ovulation to menstruation.
Key Points:
- * Mood disturbance, including anxiety or depression
- * Irritability
- * Lack of focus
- * Fatigue
- * Insomnia
- * Change in libido
- * Headache or migraine
- * Breast tenderness
- * Aches and pains, including back pain and pelvic discomfort
- * Food cravings
- * Worsening of symptoms of other diseases, such as epilepsy, fibromyalgia, auto-immune diseases, and PCOS
How Can Naturopathic Medicine Help?
PMS often results from a combination of hormonal imbalances and liver congestion. Therefore, it is important to consider the impact of your thyroid and adrenal health on the function of your reproductive glands. In addition, my patients find that by supporting their liver function their PMS symptoms tend to improve. We will work together to devise a daily and monthly routine that allows you to lessen the severity of your symptoms over time. This will include dietary, exercise, and basic treatment counseling, as well as various supplements that will modulate your hormones and lead to more peaceful cycles. But, beyond decongesting your liver and balancing your hormones, we will work on fixing the underlying reasons why this condition developed in the first place.
