Causes of Candida Overgrowth

Candida syndrome is a multifactorial condition and therefore treatment requires identifying and correcting the factors that led to yeast overgrowth. Effective treatment involves much more than simply killing off the yeast.

Here is a list of some of the most common causes or factors that play a role in yeast overgrowth:

  • Decreased digestive secretions - reduced gastric acid and pancreatic enzymes
  • Dietary factors - too much refined sugars, processed foods
  • Impaired immunity - food allergies
  • Nutrient deficiencies
  • Drugs - particularly antibiotics, but also corticosteroids, oral contraceptives
  • Impaired liver function - congested liver, impaired detoxification
  • Underlying disease states
  • Altered bowel flora
  • Prolonged antibiotic use
